On a spring day in a northern climate, a river frozen by winter has begun to thaw. Water flows around areas still covered in ice and snow. The water sounds white noise is so peaceful, and it blocks out distracting noise.
When I was a kid growing up in Alaska, we called this time of year Breakup. It meant that the snow was breaking up and you had to spend a lot of time with a hoe directing where the water was flowing, so it wouldn't flood your basement. I just realized that calling it breakup doesn't make sense to most people in the rest of the world. Silly Alaskans. We also referred to snowmobiles as snowmachines.
